Education and Economic Recovery
October 11-14, 2017 | Lagos State University, Faculty of Education
… I am by training and profession a lawyer. By vocation and day-to-day existence, I am an educationist. In the University system, it is our tradition to retreat to our disciplinary silos as specialist faculties, colleges or schools, zealously guarding our intellectual borders while trying to engage in interdisciplinary concert. But we are all bound by a common bond as education practitioners. Education is the indispensable oil that lubricates society’s perpetual grind toward progress across cultures and civilizations. Education happens in informal, formal or more organized contexts. Such contexts are determined by ideologies, cultures and worldviews. For instance, those who say that “western education is evil” are not insisting that education is evil. Therefore, notwithstanding our ideological extremisms, we all agree that education is indispensable. …

3rd Global Congress on IP and the Public Interest
IP “Periphery” & IP “Core”
December 11, 2013 | Cape Town, South Africa
This is a keynote presentation by Professor Oguamanam to the Cape Town 2013 combined 3rd Global Congress on IP and the Public Interest and Open AIR Conference on Innovation and IP in Africa. Prof. Oguamanam addresses the topic of “IP ‘Periphery’ and IP ‘Core’: Knowledge in the (Dis)service of Public Interest”. He argues that in recent decades, intellectual property protection has been on steroids, drawing in any and every subject matter, shrinking flexibilities and exceptions to the point of asphyxiation of the public interest. In this moment of forced soul-searching, the IP periphery confronts the IP core, redirecting attention to collaborative knowledge production, to put the public interest back into IP.
